Starring Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci
Nothing on earth could persuade me to read the original tale by Washington Irving because it might alter my opinion of this version of "Sleep Hollow" - Although I'm not a real fan of gloom and doom, this has to be one of the best-looking horror films in recent years! - I'll explain.
Somewhere around the turn of the 18th century - - - Johnny Depp stars as the legendary Ichabod Crane, an eccentric constable sent to the village of Sleepy Hollow to investigate a series of recent murders reportedly committed by a headless horseman. Convinced that these rumors are nothing more than local superstitions, he sets out to prove his theory that the deaths are probably connected to one of the locals who has methodically planned the brutal slayings! It soon becomes quite clear that Ichabod is stonger on theory than practice. - As the body count continues to mount, the head count remains at zero.... Apparently the villain not only decapitates his victims, he also takes their heads with him - - You'll have to see the movie to find out why!!!
There's a lot of gore in this R-rated film, but then you'd expect a fair amount of that in a true horror flick. - Where Sleepy Hollow succeeds is in it's lavish visual design. The details are perfect in this haunted setting, and everything from the eerie graveyard to the fog-laden forest casts an impressive shadow in the minds of it's viewers.
