Starring Matt Damon - Gwyneth Paltrow - Jude Law
As intelligent and stylish a thriller as you'll see the past year. Matt Damon stars as Tom Ripley, a poor boy who is mistaken for an Ivy League graduate, and offered a trip to Europe to bring home Dickie Greenleaf (Jude Law), a buddy that he allegedly knew while attending Princeton. Dickie, a runaway playboy and heir to a millionaire shipbuilder, is 'hiding out' somewhere in Italy - Marge Sherwood (Gwyneth Paltrow) is his girl friend. - Initially uncertain of their 'past' acquaintance, Dickie and Marge soon become quite charmed by their new-found friend. Before you know it, Damon's Ripley is exchanging his first borrowed identity for another--the playboy's. Complications lead to Dickie's untimely death and a string of lies and cover-ups.
The Talented Mr. Ripley works in a way that is enjoyable without being admirable. Damon is outstanding in his role as a likeable fellow who goes convincingly 'postal'. The plot works surprisingly well as we begin to see the horror develop behind his gleaming smile and Eagle Scout eyes. Tom Ripley is not the gentle 'boy next door' that we've come to know and love in Damon . . . but he does give you what you'd expect from him. - - - Another award-winning performance!
